Seabiscuit A Critique Essay Example
Seabiscuit: A Critique Essay They say life is stranger than fiction and for a book lover like me, nothing pleases me more than reading about the true stories of real people and their struggles with real life. Laura Hillenbrandââ¬â¢s Seabiscuit: An American Legend has both entertained me and inspired me ââ¬âit is just one of those books that make you look at life from a whole new perspective. Seabiscuit: An American Legend is 399 pages full of inspiration about a thoroughbred, published by the Ballantine Publishing Group in New York City in 2001.In my opinion, most everyone will like the book ââ¬âif not completely love it. After all, it is the classic story of an underdogââ¬â¢s achievements despite the challenges along the way. In the book, we are introduced to Seabiscuit, an unlikely champion. He was described by Hillenbrand as a rough-hewn, undersized horse with a sad little tail and knees that wouldnt straighten all the way. At a gallop, he jabbed one foreleg sideways, as if he were swatting flie s. For two years, he fought his trainers and floundered at the lowest level of racing, misunderstood and mishandled, before his dormant talent was discovered by three men.One was Red Pollard, a failed prizefighter and failing jockey who had been living in a horse stall since being abandoned at a makeshift racetrack as a boy. One was Tom Smith, The Lone Plainsman, a virtually mute mustang breaker who had come from the vanishing frontier, bearing generations of lost wisdom about the secrets of horses. The third was a cavalry veteran named Charles Howard, a former bicycle repairman who made a fortune by introducing the automobile to the American West.In the sultry summer of 1936, Howard bought Seabiscuit for a bargain-basement price and entrusted him to Smith and Pollard. Using frontier training methods that raised eyebrows on the backstretch, they discovered that beneath the hostility and fear was a gentlemanly horse with keen intelligence, frightening speed, and ferocious competitive will. It was the beginning of four years of extraordinary drama, in which Seabiscuit overcame a phenomenal run of bad fortune to become one of the most spectacular performers in sports history. Seabiscuit began competing in the cruelest years of the Great Depression, with his rags-to-riches story ending up as American cultural iconââ¬âdrawing an almost-fanatical following and thereby established himself as the single biggest newsmaker of 1938.In my opinion, no author could have pulled off the story of Seabiscuit than Laura Hillenbrand. According to the official website of Seabiscuit: An American Legend, Hillenbrand has been writing about history and Thoroughbred racing since 1988 and has been a contributing writer/editor for Equus magazine since 1989. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, Talk, American Heritage, Readers Digest, ABC Sports Online, The New York Post, The Week, Attache, The Blood-Horse, Thoroughbred Times, The Backstretch, and many other publications. Her 1998 American Heritage article on Seabiscuit won the Eclipse Award for Magazine Writing, the highest journalistic award for Thoroughbred racing. She is currently serving as a consultant on a Universal Pictures movie based on this book as well as a PBS documentary on Seabiscuits life. An alumna of Kenyon College, Laura lives in Washington, D.C.According to the review which came out in the New York Times, Laura Hillenbrand, has written an absorbing book that stands as the model of sports writing at its best in telling the Cinderella story of Seabiscuit and his devoted trainer, owner and jockey. In this book, Ms. Hillenbrand gives us a visceral appreciation of that sport as refracted through the tumultuous lives of Seabiscuit and his human companions, while at the same time creating a keenly observed portrait of a Depression-era America bent on escapism and the burgeoning phenomenon of mass-media-marketed celebrity.Hillenbrand narrates the Seabiscuit-War Admiral showdown with the same panache she brings to the accounts of Biscuits remarkable comeback from a seemingly career-ending injury (paralleled, uncannily, by Pollards efforts to recover from a series of debilitating injuries) and his repeated attempts to win the coveted Santa Anita Handicap.Without a doubt, her storytelling takes on a deeper level ââ¬âvividly giving us a portrait of a piece of American history. The fact that Hillenbrand took note of every detail that took place also contributed to the success of the book and the film that followed it.According to the website of the Bookreporter, the book which is told in the tradition of the oral biography, Hillenbrand wisely leaves much of the story to be narrated by the men who knew and loved Seabiscuit the best his owner Charles Howard, his trainer Tom Smith, and jockey Red Pollard. In turn, the lives of these three men are remembered to Hillenbrand by the men and women who knew and loved them best. In this way, Hillenbrand, a well-established t horoughbred-racing journalist, lets the story of this remarkable horse tell itself, needing only her evocative prose to guide it along. Grounding the story in the people that touched and were touched by Seabiscuit also acts as a safeguard literary device that prevents the book from careening off into the dangerous territory of over-anthropomorphization which would be all too easy, given the subject matter. As noted in one of the reviews about the book, the stories of the races in which Seabiscuit shattered speed records are turned into infinities where the possibilities of winning or losing reveal themselves in infinitesimal increments. These passages are almost unbearably suspenseful. Hillenbrand also has a good sense of what to leave out, which may account for the books near-perfect pacing and length. I definitely would have to agree that the heart of its appeal is in its seamless combination of triumph and melancholy. It cannot be overemphasized that the book has been wonderfully crafted by Hillenbrand whose expertise on horse-racing proved to be an asset in the creation of this book. Hillenbrand encapsulates her history and sporting lessons in the trappings of the kind of rags-to-riches story that is impossible not to relate to, the secret that makes this book a fascinating read for those new to thoroughbred racing or thoseà pitifully ignorant of the seminal events of American history.Clearly, Hillenbrand brings us back to an era racing fans today wish would return, when racing was king and drew large crowds and widespread media attention. But more importantly, her work is appealing to almost anyone, including those who have never attended a race or read a book about the sport before. Those who have never heard of Seabiscuit can now understand the greatness racing fans of the late 1930s were fortunate to have witnessed first-hand. This broad appeal has led to a feature film currently in production that is slated for wide release in the fall of 2003.Regar dless of the era, I am confident that most everyone will be able to relate to the story of Seabiscuit and his journey towards greatness. It is a must-read for everyone who has encountered a problem and emerged victorious.

Moral Rationality
Moral Rationality Nowadays almost everyone has a cellular phone, from teenagers to professionals. Everyday we see more than one person talking on the phone, while they are walking on the street, riding the train on their way to work, even at restaurants while having dinner. There is certainly nothing wrong with having a cellular phone. They are popular, very convenient, they make everyone's life much easier, it is easier for everyone to communicate, and they are great for emergencies. But when a cellular phone is used while driving it puts someone's life in danger. I think there are many reasons why hand-held cellular phones should be banned while driving The first reason is distraction. Talking on the cellular phone while driving distracts the driver from the road and can be the cause of a deadly accident. It is very easy to get distracted from what or who is in front of your car and pay more attention to the conversation on the phone, especially if that conversation is an interesting one.mobile phon e masts

Want the Hard Truth Soft Skills Can Make or Break Your Job Search
Want the Hard Truth Soft Skills Can Make or Break Your Job Search Workers in tech-centric roles are right to be proud of the technical skills theyââ¬â¢ve acquired over the course of their educations and careers. These skills are hard won and are imperative to their success in their chosen fields. However, a recent study suggests that recruiters today have a soft spot for soft skills, regardless of the role they are looking to fill. Even in careers where soft skills havenââ¬â¢t historically held a ton of weight ââ¬â such as software development and accounting, for example ââ¬â employers are now looking for candidates who are the whole package. In other words, itââ¬â¢s critical today that workers, even ones in highly technical jobs, demonstrate that they also possess soft skills. To start, letââ¬â¢s define what a tech-centric job is exactly. According to LiveCareerââ¬â¢s recently released 2018 Skills Gap Report, researchers defined tech-centric jobs as those jobs for which some form of higher education is required to perform the role. These jobs typically rely heavily on a bevy of hard skills ââ¬â or skills that can be learned and measured.(This contrasts with soft-centric occupations, which are defined as roles that donââ¬â¢t require formal training or higher education. These roles include bartenders, customer service representatives, and sales associates, among others.)To better understand the skills that employers want ââ¬â and to compare those skills to the ones that jobseekers are listing on their resumes ââ¬â the study took a ââ¬Å"big dataâ⬠approach to analyzing thousands of resumes and job ads across 12 different occupations. The question the study sought to answer is this one: is the skills gap is real, or are jobseekers just underreporting their skill sets in resumes?Jobseekers in tech-centric occupations should analyze the studyââ¬â¢s most arresting findings on soft skills to increase the likelihood of success in the job market. Some key finding to consider include:The s tudy found that ââ¬â across the board ââ¬â employers increasingly value customer service and communications skills. In fact, job ads in 11 of the 12 occupational types list customer service as among the most desirable skills. This means that even in jobs where customer service isnââ¬â¢t traditionally a requirement ââ¬â such as accountants, teachers, and registered nurses ââ¬â employers expect jobseekers to make those skills a focus today.Communication skills appear in job ads for 12 of the 12 occupation types that the study focused on, meaning all jobseekers should place an emphasis on this soft skill in their resumes.Tech-centric employers demand largely the same soft skills as customer-facing employers. In fact, three of the top five required soft skills in both occupational categories are the same.Jobseekers in all professions are listing far too few skills on their resumes, overall. Individual job ads, on average, contain 21.8 skills. Resumes, on average, conta in only 13 skills.Itââ¬â¢s not surprising that tech-centric workers arenââ¬â¢t emphasizing soft skills since job ads for these professions are asking for 4.25x more hard skills than soft skills. However, the report also found that since employers increasingly value customer service and communications skills in candidates, jobseekers who neglect to thoroughly list soft skills on their resumes may be doing themselves a disservice. The takeaway for jobseekers in tech-centric occupations: shine a light on those intangible but increasingly important soft skills on your resume; they matter just as much as your hard skills. In fact, jobseekers who can clearly communicate their soft skills to potential employers ââ¬â both in their resumes and in job interviews ââ¬â will have an advantage over those candidates who cannot.Experts agree that the best way to accomplish this goal is for jobseekers to concentrate on learning how to write a resume in such a way that it mimics the lang uage of a job ad. This ensures that they are including all the most valuable skills cited in the job post, and it will also help get their resumes past an applicant tracking system (ATS), which many employers use today to screen out unqualified candidates.Wording is of key importance, because most ATSs donââ¬â¢t understand nuance in language, which means you must echo the language the ads use precisely in resumes. Fail to do so and you risk being eliminated from the running, even as a qualified candidate. How precisely do you need to match the wording? Exactly. If a job ad asks for ââ¬Å"solid verbal communication skills,â⬠and you list writing ââ¬Å"solid oral communication skills,â⬠you could be knocked out of the running!Jobseekers can find additional learnings, plus a PDF download of the report, via the 2018 Skills Gap Report link at the beginning of the article.LiveCareer bio:Need more guidance on how to incorporate soft skills into your resume? Expert advice on being a successful student Essay
Expert advice on being a successful student - Essay Example However, the university experience is not all about study and academics, it is also about finding a proper social fit with unique peers from many different cultures and social backgrounds. Being a successful student is about being able to successfully blend social, recreational, and study in a way that is rewarding, careful, and mature. To see the best ways to gain this necessary balance, I decided it would be wise to interview two experts that are quite familiar with the academic demands required at the University of Indianapolis and its many social systems. To find out this expert advice, I conducted interviews with Jessica Bramstedt, a senior biology student at the university and biology Professor Mary Gobbett. The results of the interview will discuss study habits, recreation, and how to balance free time at the university. The expert opinion about the university experience and social rewards at the University of Indianapolis will be compared and contrasted to determine the best advice available to be a successful student. Avoiding being overwhelmed is highly important for the student in a new environment. It is important to find out what qualities a student should have in the university. In relation to study, both Jessica Bramstedt and Professor Gobbett provided valuable information about the qualities a student should carry in the classroom. ... Both Jessica Bramstedt and Professor Gobbett found one of the most critical imperatives to be the creation of a time control system that allows for much time devoted to academics. This might include making personal schedules that show daily and weekly activities that allows the student to stick to homework completion timelines with ample time for study care. It was discovered that removing distractions was highly important. Both of the interview respondents identified that the student needed to maintain a great deal of study. These are periods where the student removes distractions from their environment and focuses on the course content in journals, textbooks and lecture materials. Jessica suggested that I would gain more success by reading the textbook chapters and making sure all assignments have been completed. Professor Gobbett, the expert in actual teaching, suggested that such study should involve a large focus on problem-solving in study habits. Clearly, the University of Ind ianapolis will require devotion and concentration toward study if the student wishes to become a success. To gain even more knowledge about study, I asked about success factors to help in study. In contrasting view, the interviewees had differing views about one key role of the learning portion of the university experience. Professor Gobbett suggested that a great deal of success would come from being interactive with the lecturer by asking many questions and to ââ¬Å"pay attention to the hints provided by the professorâ⬠related to the quality and depth of what is being discussed to improve learning. Jessica Bramstedt seemed to see the learning process as being more self-managed, suggesting that there

Discuss how attitude gender in Shakespeare's play Othello affect the Essay
Discuss how attitude gender in Shakespeare's play Othello affect the outcome of the play - Essay Example e bed is at the very heart of the tragedy of Othello; offstage but dramatically the center of attention in the first scene and again in the first scene of the second act, it is literally and symbolically at the center of the last scene and is explicitly hidden from sight at the conclusion. Whether the marriage is consummated, when it is consummated, and what the significance of this consummation is for Othello and Desdemona have all been an important source of debate about the play. Throughout its critical history, Othello, like the other problem plays, has generated passionate and radically conflicting responses--responses that are invariably tied to the critics emotional responses to the characters and to the gender relations in the play. Othello, Iago, and Desdemona have been loved and loathed, defended and attacked, judged and exonerated by critics just as they are by characters within the play. "Almost damned in a fair wife" is Leslie Fiedlers alternate title for his chapter on Othello in The Stranger in Shakespeare. In it he asserts of the women in the play: "Three out of four, then, [are] weak, or treacherous, or both." Thus he seconds Iagos misogyny and broadens the attack on what Leavis has called "The sentimentalists Othello," the traditional view of the play held by Coleridge, Bradley, Granville-Barker, Knight, Bayley, Gardner, and many others. These "Othello critics," as I shall call them, accept Othello at his own high estimate. They are enamored of his "heroic music," affirm his love, and, like him, are overwhelmed by Iagos diabolism, to which they devote much of their analysis. Like Othello, they do not always argue rationally or rigorously for their views and so are vulnerable to attacks on their romanticism or sentimentality. Reacting against these traditionalists, "Iago critics" (Eliot, Empson, Kirschbaum, Rossiter, and Mason, as well as Fiedler and Leavis) ta ke their cues from Iago. Like him, they are attracted to Othello, unmoved by his

Dantes Inferno The General Strategy And Structure
Despite the fact that the reason for the disciplines in Dante s Inferno might be misty, their general strategy and structure appears to be direct. There are numerous concentric rings, each with a transgression or set of sins connected with them, and a discipline for every wrongdoing. At the point when miscreants kick the bucket they are relegated to the spot which is assigned to properly rebuff the specific sorts of wrongdoing that they submitted amid their lifetime. As Dante slides to lower circles, we see that the disciplines deteriorate and more terrible, so that more extreme disciplines are made to compare to all the more ethically disgusting sins. In all cases, it is the transgressions of a man that place that individual at every level of Hellfire. Every specific discipline is then mirrored the way of the transgression which it rebuffs, being like it in structure. For example, the overlaid heavy layers of the Posers relates to the way of the wrongdoing itself, for the transgression is to seem great on the outside keeping in mind the end goal to disguise the insufferable internal reality (XXII). The same sort of correspondence between the activity and the wrongdoing can be found in alternate circles also. This could be seen as being wonderful equity, or, in a more complex perspective, demonstrating that the discipline of the miscreant is to be related to their wrongdoing, as unforgiven sin will dependably over the long haul be a torment to the heathen.
